According to Bloomberg, the state of Louisiana in the United States has filed a lawsuit against Roblox, a game platform, alleging that the company “condons and sustains a network environment that fosters illegal elements that threaten the safety of minors, directly resulting in widespread abuse of minors in Louisiana”.

Roblox has over 111.8 million active-day users and is well received by children. The proportion of users under 13 was close to 40 per cent in the previous quarter. However, the platform has been scrutinized for failing to effectively protect child security. Last year, Bloomberg reported on the exposure of sexual aggressors on the platform, and the investment agency Hindenburg Research alleged that its investigation revealed “a paedophile hell full of X content”. In recent months, Roblox has taken measures to strengthen the child safety function, including the introduction of a parent account to manage the child ‘ s account to allow parents to block suspicious persons from the child ‘ s friend list.

According to the complaint, however, the State of Louisiana has accused Roblox of “intentional inaction and failure to implement effective security measures to protect child users from a well-documented threat of sexual abuse, as well as a long-standing failure to warn parents and children of the foreseeable danger of their platforms, which directly contributes to the widespread sexual exploitation of minors and causes serious and lasting harm to children in Louisiana”.
“Roblox is fraught with harmful content and child sex offenders because it places user growth, income and profit above child safety”, according to Liz Murray, Attorney General of Louisiana. “Each parent should be aware of the clear and present danger that Roblox poses to his children in order to prevent unimaginable tragedies from happening in his own home.”

Kablox spokesman Kadia Koroma stated: “It is absolutely false to accuse Roblox of deliberately placing users at risk of exploitation. Every day, tens of millions of users around the globe use Roblox to learn STEM skills, play, imagine and experience safety on our platform. We have invested massive resources in building security infrastructure, including advanced technology and 7*-hour manual audits, to detect and deter inappropriate content and behaviour. This is not only of critical importance to us, but also because it is a key issue and of great importance to our communities. We refute these allegations and are committed to working with Prosecutor General Muriel to protect child security.
Despite the fact that no system is perfect, Roblox has implemented strict protection measures. For example, limiting the sharing of personal information, links and photo sharing among users to protect communities. Unfortunately, the outlaws would try to bypass the system and induce users to leave the platform. We continue our efforts to stop such acts and to strengthen our vetting strategy to create a safe and pleasant environment for all users.”
According to past reports from Bloomberg, seven cases of child sexual abuse against Roblox have been brought in total in just two weeks.
This week, Roblox wrote on his website explaining why he was banned from his so-called “compulsory police officers”: these people tried to trap outlaws on the platform by “similar means to real sex offenders”. A user named “Schlep” (whose X-platform personal data claims to have helped Roblox catch six related outlaws) released on X last week a stop-of-violation message intercepted allegedly by Roblox.
